About Matthew Myers
I\'ve spent fourteen years at Human Rights Watch building and leading finance functions that have to work harder than the budget allows. HRW operates across 30+ countries on a lean nonprofit model, and the finance function I run has to be both rigorous and resourceful — supporting a $105M+ organization while staying ahead of the risks that don\'t announce themselves. My work sits at the intersection of financial strategy and organizational leadership. I partner closely with the CFO and board on long-range planning, investment decisions, and risk analysis. I co-lead the development of HRW\'s treasury and cash management function and identified FX exposure as a risk the organization wasn\'t adequately tracking. When our CFO position was vacant for a year, I covered the board finance and executive reporting responsibilities without a gap.
Experience
Director of Global Financial Planning and Analysis
Sep 2022 — Present
Leading FP & A for a $105M+ global nonprofit across 30+ countries and 25+ currency markets. My team of seven covers financial planning, forecasting, scenario analysis, and board-level reporting across four continents. The work has expanded well beyond traditional FP & A. I co-built HRW\'s treasury and cash management function with the CFO — including FX risk strategy, bequests policy, and investment account policy — and serve as a core member of HRW\'s Technology and Information Governance Committee and its AI Governance Subcommittee, which shapes how the organization approaches AI adoption, data privacy, and technology investment.Other highlights: redesigned our planning process from static annual budgets to continuous, strategy-aligned forecasting; built HRW\'s data science and BI capability within FP & A from scratch, including our first Data Analyst hire and a 50% efficiency gain through NetSuite and Power BI integration; and personally building AI fluency through hands-on automation development and structured self-study.
