About Matthew Newman

Matt Newman is a Senior Director and Global Head of Operational Risk and ERM Execution at Barings, a Charlotte-based $480+ billion global investment manager. He is responsible for establishing and leading an effective and scalable operational risk function covering both the public and private asset businesses, as well as supporting the execution of the broader enterprise risk management framework to ensure consistency, alignment and the continued organizational maturity across global risk disciplines, regional coverage and risk governance committees.Matt joined Barings in 2021 after 6 years at Guggenheim Partners, where he most recently was a Vice President and responsible for building and managing key components of the enterprise and counterparty risk management programs. His key areas of focus included risk governance and reporting, oversight and monitoring of trading and holding exposures, and review of trade execution and performance outliers, as well as enhancing workflows and transparency within the investment process for fixed income and equity strategies. Prior to joining Guggenheim in 2015, Matt worked for Lyxor Asset Management Inc, a former subsidiary of Société Générale Group, where he supported the COO and CFO on financial operations and business initiatives across the US-based alternative and hedge fund solutions platform. He also previously worked for Société Générale’s Corporate & Investment Bank where he focused on derivatives and structured products in the cross-asset solutions group. Matt holds an MBA with High Distinction from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Arizona.
