1. Staff Mechanical Design Engineer

   Tesla

   Dec 2020 — Present · San Diego, CA, US

   Mechanical engineer at Tesla directly responsible for the mechanical cell components and overall cell mechanical architecture. Founding member of Tesla’s cell design team. Co-inventor of the Tesla Tabless Jellyroll and the 4680 cell. Created the first concepts and A/B phase prototypes of the Gen 1 crimped cell.Created the first concepts and A/B phase prototypes of the Gen 2 laser welded cell. Developed the parts, fixtures, and processes used to establish the plan of record cell design used in the Model Y structural battery and the Cybertruck. Improved the safety of the 4680 battery cell by designing and building cells with specially designed features to address catastrophic thermal cell failure in coordination with the safety / pack engineering teams. Led several advanced mechanical concepts to improve ESR, sealing, part cost, thermal management, and manufacturing simplifications.
