WORK HISTORY
Assistant General Counsel - Environmental @USG
My environmental law practice includes litigation, regulatory counseling, and due diligence. I litigate CERCLA (Superfund) cost recovery and contribution cases, RCRA citizen suits, toxic tort cases, enforcement actions brought by federal and state environmental agencies for violations of air, water and waste laws, permitting disputes, and insurance coverage claims. I provide counsel on regulations adopted pursuant to the Clean Air Act (Title V, New Source Review, Prevention of Significant Deterioration, and Hazardous Air Pollutants) and the Clean Water Act (NPDES, Pretreatment). I manage and direct environmental site assessments under the EPA’s All Appropriate Inquiries Rule and the investigation and remediation of contaminated properties under state clean-up programs. In addition to knowing statutes, regulations, and administrative agency guidance, the practice of environmental law requires an ability to understand scientific and engineering principles. I am a scientist as a well as a lawyer. My undergraduate and graduate school education was in the field of geology. Prior to becoming an attorney, I worked as a hydrogeologist with an environmental consulting firm for 7 years. As a hydrogeologist, I planned and implemented investigations of contaminated properties, conducted risk assessments, and evaluated environmental remediation alternatives for soil and groundwater cleanups. I serve on the Illinois State Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section Council and am active with the American Bar Association\'s Section on Environment, Energy and Resources. I regularly speak and write on a variety of environmental law topics.
