ABOUT MATTHEW FORD

Matthew Ford is an academic studying connectivity and the conduct of war on the battlefields of the 21st centuryHis third book ‘War in the Smartphone Age’ was published by Hurst & Co, London in June and Oxford University Press, New York in September 2025. This shows how smart devices have radically democratised participation in the conduct of war.Prior to this Matthew co-authored ‘Radical War’, also with Hurst & Co, London and Oxford university Press, New York 2022, with Professor Andrew Hoskins. This book brings war and media studies into close discussion, examining the way the digital mediates the representations of war.Matthew\'s first book,\'Weapon of Choice - Small Arms and the Culture of Military Innovation\', is an analysis of military innovation and culture and was published by Hurst & Co, London and Oxford University Press, New York in 2017. Matthew is an Associate of the IWM Institute and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Global and National Security Institute at the University of South Florida. He has previously held positions as a visiting scholar in the Defense Analysis Department at the US Naval Postgraduate School and as a West Point Fellow. Before academia, he worked for PwC and IBM and served as a Strategic Analyst for Dstl at the UK Ministry of Defence.He has held leadership roles in both professional services and academia, including Deputy Head of School and Director of Teaching and Learning at the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex. Additionally, he is an Honorary Historical Consultant to the Royal Armouries (UK) and the founding Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal for Military History.
