As a Biomedical Engineering Intern at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI), I am contributing to translational research efforts under the guidance of Dr. Chongming (Tom) Jiang. My work focuses on applying computational methods to support predictive modeling in kidney transplant outcomes, leveraging both clinical and molecular data.My responsibilities involve curating and analyzing high-dimensional datasets, including single-cell RNA sequencing and gene expression signatures, to uncover biomarkers associated with transplant rejection or tolerance. I use tools such as R and Python to develop machine learning models, particularly XGBoost, to improve risk stratification and enhance prognostic accuracy in post-transplant care.In addition to building and validating these models, I collaborate with wet-lab researchers and clinicians to ensure data processing pipelines and insights align with biological relevance and clinical utility. This includes feature engineering from omics data, cross-validation strategies, and integrating domain knowledge into model interpretation.I regularly present progress and insights in lab meetings, and I am preparing to share results at the final institute-wide research symposium. This internship has strengthened my experience in biomedical data science, computational biology, and clinical decision support, equipping me to contribute to innovative solutions at the interface of data and medicine.
