ABOUT MATT UNERMAN
I help purpose-driven organisations shape and share their impact through practical sustainability strategy, impact measurement, and stakeholder engagement. As a freelance sustainability consultant, I partner with start-ups, scale-ups, impact investors, and universities working across sustainable and ethical food systems, animal welfare, waste & recycling, and regenerative agriculture.Since going freelance, I have worked with organisations such as foodfacts.org, University College Birmingham, Ethex, and Ethical Seafood Research to improve operations, measure and report impact, develop waste reduction programmes, and translate complex food systems research into accessible public education. This has included building impact dashboards, designing KPIs, improving recycling systems, and creating content that helps people make more informed food choices. Before freelancing, I spent two years at Compassion in World Farming, leading corporate engagement on regenerative farming and alternative proteins, where I developed a benchmarking scorecard that evaluated major retailers and manufacturers and helped secure over in programme funding. Prior to that, I was a food waste consultant at Anthesis, where I authored the technical report for WWF\'s Hidden Waste study and worked with retailers, governments, and NGOs on measurement, strategy, and reporting. I also worked at Costa Coffee, leading multi-stakeholder sustainability initiatives, including a soft plastics recycling pilot and deposit return scheme engagement, where I helped develop the UK sustainability strategy and navigated evolving packaging and circularity legislation.I bring experience from across NGOs, consultancies, and multinational corporations, which means I understand how to translate sustainability ambition into credible, cost-effective action for teams that are often stretched on time, budget, or in-house expertise. Whether you need support with ESG reporting, navigating emerging regulations, meeting retailer sustainability demands, reducing waste, or embedding impact into operations, I work part-time or project-based to give you the strategic and practical support you need without the overhead of a full-time hire.Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP)| TEDx speaker | Expertise in sustainable food systems, regenerative farming, and animal advocacyIf you are working on sustainability, food systems, or animal welfare and need flexible, grounded support that drives real progress, let\'s connect.
