ABOUT MATTHEW STRINGER

I’m Matt. I like to fish. I think fishing gets a bad rap. People visualize sitting for hours on a boat; no movement, dullness in the air, waiting for the fish to come to you. That’s boring. To me, fishing is about setting a goal and utilizing all of the tools in your tackle-box to achieve it. It’s about testing an idea and modifying it based on the results. No fish with this lure? Try a different one. Adapting to your environment and knowing when to relocate is crucial. No luck at this spot? Let’s move to the next. Applying this methodology outside of my hobby has helped to bring me success. My post-secondary education started by studying Network Engineering and Security, eventually becoming an honours graduate. I then moved to my current spot, studying Software Engineering at McMaster University. By setting constant goals and adapting where necessary, I’ve been able to fill my “tackle-box” with many core networking and software engineering skills. During my co-op terms I’ve joined some exciting teams and projects. The most valuable part of these experiences has been learning from the more experienced “anglers”, who have already found success in their environment. If a veteran is willing to show you their favourite lure or spot, you better take it. I believe my future lies in the software world, calling on my networking experience when useful. For now I’m trying to learn as much as I can from those around me, and go on as many fishing trips as I can. What can I say…I’m hooked.
