Mechanical design, fabrication, and integration of an autonomous underwater submarine for space simulated conditions, oceanic exploration, and pipeline exploration in international RoboSub competitions. Focused on mechanical subsystems, including actuation mechanisms, structural components, and system packaging within a pressure-resistant frame. Engineered pneumatic actuators to improve reliability and repeatability of underwater motion, optimizing piston placement, and developing modular deployment mechanisms. Designed structural interfaces and brackets that enhance performance under underwater loading conditions. Installed and configured pneumatic infrastructure, including regulators, valves, and high-pressure lines. Performed cross-subsystem mechanical integration, ensuring proper clearances, alignment, and compatibility with electrical and control systems. This work supported iterative testing cycles to refine the AUV’s mechanical robustness and modularity while enabling precise actuation and underwater operation. ROS 2 coding for robot control.

ABOUT MATTHEW SCHOLL

I’m a mechanical engineer who thrives on solving complex problems through hands-on design, analysis, and collaboration. I’ve worked on everything from autonomous underwater vehicles, quadruped robots, and NASA-affiliated lunar exploration systems to scientifc instruments and industrial optimzation. In these experiences, I\'ve combined mechanical design, software, and data-driven analysis. I enjoy turning ideas into tangible results—refining mechanisms, optimizing systems, and can work across disciplines to make things work in the real world. Whether building prototypes, improving manufacturability, or developing analytical tools, I focus on designing solutions that are both practical and innovative. What excites me most is working with teams to tackle challenging engineering problems, iterating ideas, and learning from every stage of the process. I approach every project with a balance of technical rigor, creativity, and collaboration, aiming to deliver results that make a difference.
