ABOUT MATTHEW KEARNEY
Matthew is an appellate attorney and prosecutor with the California Department of Justice, where he handles complex post-conviction litigation. His practice spans felony criminal appeals, death penalty cases, and habeas corpus matters in both state and federal courts. He also litigates high-stakes criminal investigations, recusal motions, and prosecutes felonies in cases where local district attorneys have been recused. His work regularly takes him before the California Courts of Appeal, California Supreme Court, U.S. District Courts, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and, on occasion, the U.S. Supreme Court.In addition to his government service, Matthew is an international criminal law reporter for Oxford University Press and an adjunct professor at Campus, where he teaches courses in criminal law and legal writing. His background prior to law school includes work with international and human rights organizations, including the United Nations, the European Court of Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International. He has lived, worked, or traveled in over 18 countries, assisting victims of sexual violence, human trafficking, modern slavery, and state-sponsored oppression.Matthew earned a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in German literature with minors in philosophy and Russian from Brigham Young University. He studied abroad at the University of Bonn and the Akademie für internationale Bildung. Matthew received a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis School of Law, where he was nominated to the Order of the Barristers and was the recipient of the Pritikin International Law Writing Award. He was also Senior Articles Editor of the UC Davis Journal of International Law and Policy, a Problem Writing Co-Chair on the Moot Court Honors Board, and a member of the Humanitarian Aid Legal Organization (HALO). In addition to German, Matthew is fluent in Serbo-Croatian, having lived in Serbia for two years as a volunteer missionary for his church. He enjoys great outdoor adventures, pianos of all vintages, and ice cream in all flavors. He is also a self-proclaimed root beer aficionado.
