ABOUT MATTHEW J. CLARK
As a Senior Project Manager, I enjoy helping people turn a vision into reality by coordinating the process of planning, engineering, design and construction. A love of water and the discipline of engineering led me to work in the coastal and marine environments where I have been active for more than 20 years, managing complex projects throughout the world requiring 500 to man hours of activity.Three critical habits that I always try to instill in my daily work include:• Trustworthy and Clear Communication – by far the most critical requirement for moving a project in the right direction. It involves speaking clearly, writing effectively, and listening mindfully.• Strong Organization – helps greatly in providing clarity of purpose for the entire team, which means less reworking, reducing risk of scope creep, and avoiding unnecessary stress.• Reliable Documentation – takes a lot of discipline, but provides long-term benefit to the project team by creating a written framework.Colleagues and clients appreciate my knack for getting things done, keeping track of the many moving parts of a project, and mentoring younger staff. For me, that’s when the fun really begins with project management. My love of competition in sports segues well into my role of business development, where work is pursued, good ideas created, and proposals smartly prepared. Listening to the client and being fully responsive with approaches that are both creative yet comprehensive are crucial. I benefit greatly from my professional memberships in the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers, and the Project Management Institute. I admire John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach, for achieving results based on strong organization, planning, and smart execution. One of my favorite quotes from him, which has also been attributed to Benjamin Franklin, easily applies to project management: “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”
