About Matthew Idso

I am an innovative, detail-oriented, and extroverted Chemical Engineer with high technical competencies in fields spanning Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science, and Engineering. I have over a decade of experience in research and development, during which I have pioneered new therapies, interrogated biomolecules down to atomic length scales, engineered novel biological and synthetic materials, and cultivated an advanced ability to communicate technical work to broad audiences. Now, as a professional scientist and engineer, I am committed to solving grand challenges in health care. My experiences in industry and academia enabled me to build a diverse skillset that makes me an excellent technical problem solver. I have mastered a broad range of spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis, IR, Raman, fluorescence), biophysical methods (DLS, CD, SAXS, NMR, EPR), analytical techniques (HPLC, UPLC, LC-MS, SEC, GE), and activity/potency assays (high-throughput screening, enzymatic, immunoassays, cell-based, in vivo) that allow me to comprehensively characterize molecules, especially biomolecules, and their interactions. I engaged these skills to perform cutting-edge research independently and in collaboration with leading scientists across the world. Discoveries and inventions from these studies are now reported in 14 peer-reviewed articles, 3 patents, and one book chapter. I am experienced in managing complex technical projects with team compositions featuring different scientific backgrounds and experience levels. I led a team of five interdisciplinary researchers to translate an immune-activating antibiotic through preclinical studies, the technology of which attracted investment from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. During my career, I have mentored eleven undergraduate and graduate students, all of whom played key roles in academic and industry research. At Novo Nordisk, I initiated a program that recruited and trained young scientists from community colleges in ways that benefited company research objectives.I have been recognized for my achievements in scientific research and mentorship. As a postdoctoral researcher, I received an ISB Innovator award and a Dr. Christine Schaffer Award for Exemplary Service to Scientific Education. As a graduate student, I was awarded the Schlinger Fellowship for Excellence in Chemical Engineering Research and twice received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award.
