Staff Software Engineer @Monzo

View department →

Staff Engineer in the Data team, improving data warehouse performance and developer experience for the next decade of Monzo growth.I designed and built custom SQL renderer/compiler tooling, which is now the standard interface to data modelling across Monzo. Estimates suggest this automation will enable our in-progress data warehouse migration to complete years ahead of plan, saving many engineer days for each of tens of thousands of models and delivering many $m savings in cloud cost optimisations.

ABOUT MATTHEW HUXTABLE

Experienced Staff+ Engineer, comfortable working at altitude or depth. Generally found in platform or adjacent roles, but I\'ve also built and led product teams and set strategy. I\'ve spent most of my career working in product-led startups and small businesses, where I\'ve worked on scaling systems to millions of users, processing tens of millions of pounds in payments, and having lots of fun while doing it. I care about leverage: enabling product engineers to experiment faster and safer. One of my most significant and unexpected growth moments was having the opportunity to lead a tech team through an (almost) acquisition by a NASDAQ-listed company.I\'m curious by nature, which is perhaps why I\'m passionate about human factors and their applications in SRE, building secure systems, and systems thinking more generally. I\'m especially interested in complex systems and their failure modes. I\'ve contributed as a thought leader in spoken (SREcon) and written (O\'Reilly) engagements for building effective SRE cultures at small scale. Outside of work, I am a keen runner, home DIYer, electronics tinkerer, avgeek, and I\'ve self-hosted my own email since I was 11 (now with my own ASN). If it isn\'t broken, take it apart and fix it.I believe:🤝 Software is primarily about people, not code. Boring, reliable and predictable tech beats exciting every day of the week. Test in production – it will teach you the most about how your code works (or doesn\'t)🧪 We can\'t always predict what customers need – ship often, follow the data, fail early. The people at [your company] are the best people on the planet for building it.
