ABOUT MATTHEW DREW
I work on data science and MLOps in the Modelling & Research team at Sparx. Our models provide personalised classroom and homework assignments (across maths, science, and reading) for millions of students in the UK and abroad.I work closely with product leads and engineers to constantly improve upon our offering to teachers and their students. Areas I\'ve focussed on at Sparx include: orchestrating, scaling, and monitoring the models that underpin our products; investigating the use of modern ML in our domain (LLMs, neural nets); and informing product feature development.Previously I worked at the BBC, leveraging machine learning alongside one of the largest datasets in the industry to inform (predominantly) content recommendations and commissioning decisions. The bulk of my projects utilised unsupervised learning and/or LLMs.In general, I\'m motivated by public interest domains such as education, energy, and health. I like well orchestrated pipelines. I dislike overfit models and the sense that GPT is better at coding than I am. I was briefly a teacher and have a passion for children\'s right to a good education.Currently using: python, R, Terraform, GCP (Dataproc/CloudRun/BQ to SA management and image versioning), Dataform, Docker, GH Actions, pytorch, pyspark, streamlit.
