About Matthew Adelberg
I am lucky to be an Assistant Principal at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, an award winning Baltimore City Public High School that serves over 1600 students. Prior to my appointment as Assistant Principal, I served as the Visual Arts teacher, Fine Arts Department Chair, and Equity Fellow for Poly. I serve on the Fine Arts Leadership Team for Baltimore City Schools and help to plan and facilitate district wide events, develop and implement k12 sequential curriculum, plan and facilitate Professional Development for district arts teachers, and develop equitable assessment tools for arts educators.I am deeply passionate about access to education as a social justice issue, and work collaboratively with students to develop relevant, emergent curriculum stemming from their lived experiences. To this end, I have presented about art education and Social Justice at the National Art Education Association convention in 2016 and 2017, the Maryland Art Education Association convention in 2018 and 2019, and Florida State University & University of Georgia’s Art Ed & Social Justice symposium in 2018, and 2020. I have also taught workshops on art and social justice at University of Georgia to their Pre-service art education students, and hosted a workshop for Georgia Public School teachers on emergent social justice curriculum development. I was named a Maryland Teacher of Promise in 2015, MAEA Novice Teacher of the year in 2017, awarded the Samuel Glasner Creative Teaching Award in 2018, and nominated for Baltimore City Teacher of the Year in 2019 and 2022.
