ABOUT MATT HAYES
I am a senior executive and board-ready leader with more than 20 years of experience operating at the intersection of enterprise risk, safety, culture, and organizational performance in highly regulated, high-consequence environments.I currently serve as Chief Safety Officer and Vice President of Enterprise Health & Safety for the nation’s largest gas and electric utility, where I am accountable for employee, contractor, and public safety; employee training, and the systems, culture, and leadership behaviors that enable safe, reliable operations. My role requires regular engagement with executive leadership, regulators, and boards on risk oversight, governance, and enterprise decision-making.Over the course of my career, I have led complex transformations in safety culture, leadership development, training systems, and operational excellence. I am at my best in high-stakes environments where clarity of judgment, disciplined execution, and principled leadership matter most.In addition to my executive role, I am a co-founder of the California Alliance for Safety and Training (CAST), a first-of-its-kind collaboration aligning investor-owned utilities around shared safety and training standards, modeled after the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations. The alliance is now expanding beyond California, reflecting a growing, multi-state approach to collective risk reduction and capability building.I hold a Doctor of Education in Organizational Change and Leadership, am a NACD Directorship Certified® professional, and maintain senior certifications in safety and human capital. My academic work and professional focus center on how boards and executive teams shape culture, govern risk, and sustain long-term performance.Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, restoring classic cars and watches, and exploring technology and programming - interests that keep me grounded, curious, and continually learning.
