ABOUT MATT GUAGLIARDO
The world can use a little more empathy. As a humane educator, I strive to inspire learners to see through others\' eyes and develop a sense of connectedness. Humane educators work to promote social justice, environmental ethics, and animal protection, viewing all three as interconnected and interdependent. With the Chemung SPCA, I primarily focus on animal protection/welfare and bring unique lesson plans into local classrooms and community centers. Many of my lessons introduce elementary-aged learners to healthy boundaries and safe, respectful, interactions with animals. When not working with children, I use my training in community education to connect with adult learners. For the older learners, I help them see how our pets are just like 2-3y/o children who need safety, consistency, and patience while learning how to navigate our world and expectations. In the endless quest to become a more effective humane educator, I have again returned to grad school to find ways to bring the social work perspective to my lessons. Regardless of the setting, my work helps community members grow into empathetic participants who greater value the world around them.
