ABOUT MATTEO DESTRO

I am an enthusiastic researcher fascinated by science, specialised in Li-ion batteries. I’ve been fully involved in energy storage field during last 12 years, specialising my knowledge on LITHIUM ION BATTERIES, being assistant researcher in Politecnico di Torino (where I earned the Degree of Ph.D. in Materials Science and Technology) and later holding the position of Researcher in Lithops (the first Italian Li-ion technology developer and provider, developing the technology for cells production). During these years I was lucky to get in touch with the basic research on materials for LiBs (materials for ELECTRODES and POLYMER ELECTROLYTES FOR SOLID-STATE BATTERIES), as well as with a more applicative research focused on CELLS PRODUCTION and EVALUATION TEST (composite-slurry preparation, electrodes production, PROTOTYPE formation and testing). In Lithops I have been responsible for electrodes preparation procedures (design and optimisation of composite-slurry preparation, coating and electrode treatment) and responsible for the internal testing laboratory. I have been Project manager (principal investigator) for several research founded projects, participating to project meetings and following all the report/proposal activities. I also participated to the design of a 250MWh/y PRODUCTION PLANT for LiBs, particularly focusing on the electrodes preparation machines and the formation units. In Lithops my personal main tasks were- Electrodes production: material selection, recipe definition (organic solvent and water-based), preparation of work flow files (parameters definition), lab-scale slurries preparation, slurry deposition (roll-to-roll coating), coated coil treatment (calender)- Testing: evaluation of new electrodes at lab-scale (coin cells, personally assembled) and prototype cells through the development of a proper formation and testing protocol. Being a member of Group for Applied Materials and Electrochemistry (GAME Lab) in Politecnico di Torino I enjoyed working in laboratory on the research related to innovative materials for energy storage application, developing easily up-scalable procedures for the production of electrodes and polymer electrolytes. I personally developed a fast and easy process for the lab-scale production of solid-state li-ion cells, where a polymer-based solid electrolyte can be produced directly on the electrode surface and I participated to the development of an aqueous processing of cellulose-based paper-electrodes for flexible Li-ion batteries.
