About Matt Derienzo
I have worked in journalism since the day after my 18th birthday, as a reporter, editor, corporate director of news and publisher.As a newspaper publisher in Northwest Connecticut, our experiments with community engagement, including the launch of the country\'s first open-to-the-public \"newsroom cafe,\" were studied by journalism leaders from more than a dozen countries and recognized with APME\'s \"Innovator of the Year\" award.As statewide editor of Digital First Media in Connecticut, our reorganization of newsrooms around breaking news, community engagement and investigative reporting became a model for the entire company. Our coverage of the social media bullying of two 13-year-old rape victims received national attention and was recognized with DFM\'s Public Service Award. We led more than 100 journalists in covering the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. And our efforts to diversify news staff and coverage were recognized with ASNE\'s and APME\'s Robert C.
