About Matt A. Anderson
I am a certified biosafety professional (CBSP) with a PhD in chemical biology and 18 years of experience leading biosafety and biological risk management programs across public land-grant universities, academic medical centers, and private research institutes. My work operates at the intersection of science, regulatory compliance, and institutional strategy. As a subject matter expert in Biosafety and Biosecurity, I provide leadership in recombinant DNA/RNA oversight, Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) governance, and biosafety program development. I guide institutions through complex regulatory landscapes while ensuring programs remain research-enabling, scalable, and operationally sound. My expertise spans BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, high-containment and ABSL-3 operations, infectious diseases, microbiology, and select agent research. I have also support animal research and vivarium biosafety, plant research, agricultural biotechnology, and laboratory design for biomedical and translational science. I focus on building integrated biosafety frameworks that align engineering controls, policy, training, and human performance to support diverse research portfolios.A defining principle of my leadership is collaboration. I approach biosafety as a partnership with investigators — not an enforcement function. Through education, engagement, and shared problem-solving, I help cultivate a culture of compliance where researchers understand the scientific and regulatory foundations of their work and take ownership of risk management.I advise executive leadership and research administration on institutional biosafety strategy, regulatory interpretation, emerging biotechnologies, and enterprise biological risk management. My goal is to elevate biosafety as a strategic function that strengthens institutional resilience, protects public trust, and enables scientific innovation.Vision: To advance biosafety as a nationally recognized, collaborative discipline that empowers researchers, strengthens institutional governance, and supports high-consequence science with integrity and accountability.
