ABOUT MATT MURRAY
Matt Murray serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands in the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Prior to this assignment, he was the Deputy Commandant of the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at National Defense University. From 2022 to 2025, Matt was the U.S. Senior Official for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and he was nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate for the rank of Ambassador during his tenure of service in this role. A member of the Senior Foreign Service, he also has held leadership positions as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Trade Policy and Negotiations, Economic Minister-Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Director of the 24/7 Watch in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), and Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra. Matt served earlier in his career in Washington, Shanghai, Beijing, Dar es Salaam, and New Delhi, and he is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, University of Pittsburgh School of Public and International Affairs, and Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.
