About Matthew

I am a junior in the Atmospheric Science Program at the University at Albany. Being a weather enthusiast drives my passion for Atmospheric Science and creates a personal connection between my studies and daily life. My teamwork skills, dedication, and all-out love for the weather drive me to put my best effort towards my studies and daily life. There appears to never be quiet and calm weather anymore which allows me to create plenty of new content for my weather instagram page where I make forecasts and provide updates on impactful weather to New York and much of the northeast! I currently intern with the New York State Weather Risk Communication Center SWRCC, where I make forecasts for all of New York State and spot forecasts for small regions within New York State. I am also working on a mapping project where I am plotting all river flood gauges in New York State and marking specifically high flood risk areas from rivers, streams, and creeks.I am working on research with faculty from the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences to evaluate AI weather prediction models (AIFS and AIFS ENS from ECMWF) to assess their skill in forecasting synoptic and mesoscale weather events across the CONUS. By comparing AI forecasts with ERA5 data reanalysis, our goal is to understand seasonal trends and regional biases and further see if AI models can be trusted for future forecasting compared to numerical weather prediction models.
