ABOUT MASSIMO EMILIO MAFFEI

Massimo Emilio Maffei is Full Professor of Plant Physiology and Head of the Plant Physiology Unit at the Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology at the University of Turin. After graduating in Biological Sciences, he was hired as a Graduate Technician. In 1989, he became a University Researcher at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Turin, and in March 1992, he became an Associate Professor of Plant Morphology and Physiology at the Faculty of Science in Turin. Since October he is a Full Professor of Plant Physiology at the University of Turin.Since 2021, he has been a member of the International Research and Innovation Advisory Board of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome. From 2017 to 2018, he was Director of the Doctoral School in Natural Sciences and Innovative Technologies. Since 2012, he has been the Coordinator of the PhD Programs in Biosensors, Pharmaceutical and Biomolecular Sciences, and Biochemical Sciences (current position). From 2012 to 2014, he was Deputy Director for Research of the Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology. From to 2006, he was Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences. From to 2006, he was Director of the Department of Plant Biology. From October 2003 to December 2006, he was the coordinator of the Ministerial Center of Excellence for Plant and Microbial Biosensors (CEBIOVEM).In 2005, he founded the international Journal of Plant Interactions (Taylor & Francis, London), of which he is Editor-in-Chief. He teaches Plant Physiology and Astrobiology in the Bachelor\'s Degree in Biological Sciences and Climate Change Ecology in the Master\'s Degree in Environmental Biology. He was the chair of the University Diploma in Biology program and the chair of the Master\'s Degree in Plant Biology.He studies plant responses to extreme environments, with particular reference to deep space conditions, studying the effects of reduced Earth\'s magnetic field and microgravity using multiomics systems (genomics, metabolomics, proteomics), quantum biology, and artificial intelligence. He has published over 250 scientific papers, numerous textbooks, and has been invited to give plenary lectures at international conferences. He is among the top 100 Italian scientists in Plant Sciences and among the top global scientists in the field of biological sciences. He collaborates with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Kennedy Space Center (NASA).
