ABOUT MARY STEPHENS

I am a regionally grounded program director and equity strategist with more than 15 years advancing democracy, housing justice, economic inclusion, and community resilience across public agencies, philanthropy, and nonprofit coalitions. My work is rooted in the belief that meaningful change begins locally — in the histories, geographies, and relationships that shape how communities define well-being and power.Throughout my career, I have built cross-sector partnerships, designed community-informed policy strategies, and led place-based initiatives that strengthen leadership across Black and Indigenous communities, rural regions, and the U.S./Mexico borderlands. I bring a research-driven approach shaped by my background in cultural organizing, public education, and “politics of place” analysis, connecting movement histories with contemporary policy challenges.I am experienced in program design, donor cultivation, legislative-adjacent advocacy, community engagement, and the development of tools that make complex information accessible to the people most affected by it. My work includes leading housing development cohorts, coordinating regional resilience networks, managing philanthropic initiatives, producing public programming, and supporting organizations through strategic planning and systems alignment.I am committed to collaborative leadership, clear communication, and building relationships that honor local knowledge. I thrive in roles that bridge strategy and implementation, translate policy into lived impact, and support communities and institutions in navigating change.
