About Mary Gannon

Growing up, I knew I always wanted to be a writer. I still remember my first story about a butterfly with a broken wing. I was 8 years old. Years later, I am still writing, as a technical editor crafting stories about engineering, fluid power, interconnect, and motion control technologies. I consider myself one of the lucky few that went to college with a degree in mind—journalism—and came out four years later, excited to earn that degree and enter the field. My first job as a business reporter taught me the important lesson that journalists need to be jacks-of-all-trades. They need to become experts in a variety of areas. I loved it. I loved meeting people, telling their stories and most importantly, sharing how important manufacturing and industry are to our culture and country. I was honored to be recognized as the State of Ohio Media Advocate of the Year Award from the Small Business Administration. The progression into B-to-B publishing as a technical editor in the engineering space was challenging but rewarding. I still continue to tell the stories of manufacturers, engineers, inventors and idea-makers. These people are the ones who have built the foundation of this country and continue to do so. And I am always learning something new.My experiences writing in the engineering space over the past decade have given me a passion for manufacturing, engineering and technology that I didn’t realize was so strong in me. And that, in turn, has fostered my advocacy of STEM education. As a mother of young girls I will always encourage them to consider a career in manufacturing or engineering. In my mind, it’s a great option and one that is getting better everyday.Looking back at that fresh-faced college grad—one who rejoiced that she didn’t have to take math classes in college—I am amazed at how far I have come. I am just one of a few expert editors covering fluid power and interconnect technologies both online and in print and I enjoy every minute of it.
