ABOUT MARY MALIK
I am a result-driven, forward-thinking Medical Research Scientist trained in human diseases and drug interactions with over 10 years of experience in cardiology, neuroscience, oncology, vaccines and immunology. I’m driven by the big picture: translating scientific innovation into a better quality of life and positively influencing social and health outcomes. My passion for community, science communication, and connecting with people led me to start a networking and talent optimization organization a science collaboration community (Slice of Science), and organizing symposiums (5th annual BioSci Symposium), soft skill workshops, and then was elected as a President of the Biology of Graduate Student’s Association. My research investigated the molecular mechanisms of drug-protein interactions (Kv11.1, Kv7.1, Na1.1) to enhance our understanding of the effects of medications and design more specific drugs.Under the mentorship of Dr. Sergei Noskov and Dr. Henry Duff (cardiologist), global leaders in medicine and biophysics, I made a significant contribution to understanding mechanism of Long-QT syndrome, which I published as first author in Molecular Pharmacology, Biophysical Journal, Neuroscience Letters and so on. I am an expert scientific communicator and an avid learner: adept at critically analyzing, synthesizing, and communicating complex biomedical literature to both lay audiences and niche experts in the field. I presented peer-review publications (author of 6 manuscripts), conference presentations (+40 presentations in local, and international conferences and classroom settings), and taught undergraduate students (>4 years of participating as a TA in biology and biochemistry). I won highly competitive presentation awards at international conferences (The Heart by Number, Berlin, Germany) and won numerous (+15) highly competitive and prestigious scholarships and awards including the International Research Excellence Award, Alberta Graduate Excellence Award (top 5th percentile for outstanding academic achievements), Open Doctoral, and Performance award (nominated by supervisors). Outside of work, I’m outdoor enthusiast and self taught painter! I love backcountry hiking, camping, snowboarding, paddle boarding and currently trying out ice climbing! If you would like to connect, please shoot me a message on LinkedIn or at m•••••••@gmail.com
