Lives we Cannot Keep Among Rhe Original Dwellers (2019 Lulu)
Jun 2013 — Present · Madison Wisconsin. Travel for Research: US, IN
Veering off my professional path to focus on a new endeavor to write a biography of my great great grandfather (Lulu:2019) Now as I research for a novel about the same era, exploring the relationship between a missionary and an Adivasi woman, I have expanded my interest to Adivasi story telling as described After discovering of my great great grandmother\'s journal. Doris Hahn, nee Voss, revealed that she went to India in 1871 to join her brother and fiance. She lived there till she was deported along with all Germans from British India in 1915. Her brother and husband both died in India. They devoted their lives to the tribals of what is now Jarkhand. To my delight I found that my great great grandfather, Ferdinand Hahn, was familiar to the tribal people for writing the grammar book for Kurukh, one of the tribal languages, that is still being used today at the University of Ranchi.Tribal (called Adivasi in India) activism led to the creation of the state of Jharkhand in Half the Adivasi in Northeast India today are Christians. The role the German missionaries played in the region encouraged the people on the road to self rule. The German mission that Doris and Ferdinand worked under believed strongly in creating a self-reliant church in India. The expulsion of the Germans in some ways aided to this effort, as lengths were taken to maintain the Evangelical Lutheran church that continues dominantly led by Adivasi, since achieving autonomy in 1919.Encouraged by this community to write the biography of Ferdinand, who is remembered for his contributions to the preservation of Adivasi culture and their self-determination I found his story reveals their story.Finding a keen interest among the Adivasi Christian community of Jharkhand I began offering Writing Workshops: preserving heritage through story telling as described in Journal of Adivas and Indigenous Studies.
