About Martina Barnes

I am interested in seeking creative solutions to public land management and watershed protection that help meet multiple land-use planning objectives. I believe the future of natural resource management and landscape-scale conservation will involve a greater collaboration from a variety of partners from private, non-profit and government organizations.Specialties: Compiler-Highlands Regional Study: New York & New Jersey 2002; Connecticut & Pennsylvania 2010. http://na.fs.fed.us/highlands/maps_pubs/index.shtmAuthor-Forests, Water and People: Drinking water supply and forest lands in the Northeast and Midwest United States, June 2009.

Experience

  1. District Ranger

    Usda Forest Service

Nov 2020 — Present · Manchester Center, VT, US

As the Ranger, it\'s my goal to promote natural resource stewardship, engage in community collaboration, and mentor and develop strong leaders in our workforce. I am a key member of the Forest Leadership Team and I am expected to align the District priorities with regional and national stewardship priorities.I supervise a management team of four permanent staff and approximately nine additional staff, plus additional seasonal staff. I set goals and priorities including oversight and planning of several large landscape-scale, long-range resource planning projects including the Somerset Integrated Resource Project and the Early Successional Habitat Creation Project. It is my responsibility to assign work- to motivate, delegate, and hold employees accountable for their work based on their performance standards. Also, after gathering the necessary resource information, I make informed programmatic and practical economic decisions relating to land management activities including proposed recreation, ecosystem management, prescribed burning, and timber sale activities. My goal is to optimize the unit’s resources to ensure mission results.
