ABOUT MARTIN TILLOTSON
Professor Martin Tillotson is an academic at the University of Leeds, UK where he heads up the water@leeds interdisciplinary research and innovation centre and holds a personal Chair in Water Management. Prior to this he was R&D Manager at Yorkshire Water, a large water and wastewater treatment company in northern England, where for 5 years he led the innovation programme delivering audited value >5.1 on investment. Throughout his career he has been involved in water and green tech research and innovation, delivering economic value and customer service to the national sector, and influencing corporate and government policy. He has served on two UK Government Research Excellence Framework panels (REF2014 and REF2021, leading on research impact and environment), as well as United Kingdom Research & Innovation Strategic Advisory Teams in Engineering and Sustainability, and a number of UK and international peer review research funding colleges and panels, and large programme and project advisory boards. He is an experienced business owner, adviser and mentor, having worked with start-ups and university spin-outs in the water, energy, food, pharmaceutical products, and advanced materials spaces with businesses and mentees in the UK, Far East and Latin America. He has worked with the Royal Academy of Engineering on three of their flagship LIF programmes, including acting as Lead Mentor for LIF7, the LIF Technology Development impact accelerator programme, and as a LIF Alumni Advisory Council coach, and has also mentored spin-outs on the Santander X programme. His educational background is in the physical sciences, holding a BSc (Hons.) in Chemistry, an MSc in Surface Science & Catalysis, and a PhD in Synthetic Inorganic (Lanthanide) Chemistry from the University of Liverpool, UK. He is a Fellow and Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and has published >50 academic papers and book chapters. He is married and has three school-age children, and lives near Holmfirth in West Yorkshire, UK.
