ABOUT MARTIN PARKES

My role in public policy at BlackRock is to contribute constructively to the legislative process from the first stages of policy formulation through to standard setting and review, bringing the perspective of the European end-investor to the table, reflecting the fundamental tenet of our business that we act as a fiduciary to our clients. I cover a wide range of topics ranging from the regulation of mutual funds and alternative investment funds, financial stability in the non bank sector, investor protection and distribution, retirement policy and increasingly the impact of technology on asset management. I am committed to supporting the growth of the asset management industry across Europe and hold a number of positions outside BlackRock with regulators and trade associations - I am a member of the AMF’s Consultative Committee for Asset Management and Institutional Investors. I chair ICI’s Global Regulated Funds Committee and the Investment Association’s International and European Policy Committee. These are all incredibly valuable forums for dialogue between industry and policy makers as we seek to achieve our common goal of ensuring better outcomes for investors. I also strongly believe in the importance of developing diversity and inclusion in our industry. I was delighted, and not a little awed, to be asked co-chair BlackRock’s global Out & Allies Network. During my career the experience of the LGBTQ+ community in financial services has evolved dramatically. There is still much to do to promote equity and inclusion and encourage the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders to step forward. I am excited to see how role modelling, mentoring, sponsorship and effective allyship have a positive and long-lasting impact on peoples` lives. It’s a major responsibility to carry the voice of the network both within BlackRock and externally but I also draw a huge amount of energy from the dynamism, creativity and passion from all the wonderful people in our network.
