ABOUT MARTIN LEIB
I am a theoretical physicist who earned his Ph.D. designing superconducting chips to solve computationally hard problems in the realm of quantum many body physics. In the course of my work I became an expert for superconducting qubits, the hardware platform that powers the quantum computers of tech giants like IBM and Google as well as nascent companies like D-Wave and Rigetti computing. Quantum Computing is a powerful new paradigm in information technology that could one day transform what computers can do. Yet the experimental efforts to build such machines are still at very early stages of development, which is why current research focuses on finding problems that could be solved with state of the art hardware. Problems such as Quantum Chemistry, Optimization and Artificial Intelligence could benefit greatly from a quantum „coprocessor“.As a postdoc I developed a circuit design for a quantum annealer with transmon qubits, a device that can be build with current technology and has the potential to speed up hard optimization problems like training a neural network for instance. I first heard of machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence a couple of years ago in connection with the recent successes of Watson, Alpha Go and personal assistants such as Siri, Cortana and Alexa to name a few. Since then I am hooked on these topics read a lot about it and recently enrolled in the Machine Learning course by Andrew Ng on coursera. My Lise-Meitner fellowship ends this year and I am actively seeking a job opportunity in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence in Germany.
