ABOUT MARTIN IWANICKI
I began my Ph.D. studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the University in Pennsylvania in the fall of 2014, under the mentorship of Prof. Bohdana Discher in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Perelman School of Medicine. My thesis research focuses on using de novo protein design to develop genetically encoded voltage indicators and characterizing the proteins using biochemical, biophysical, and live imaging techniques. Additionally, I have mentored and trained numerous graduate, undergraduate, and high school students in the lab and was a teaching assistant for a Biostatistics course for two semesters. Experience: • Used de novo protein design to develop and express genetically encoded voltage indicators for improved membrane potential sensing in E. coli, HEK cells, and rat hippocampal neurons • Engineered water soluble, FRET-based redox sensors for fluorescent readout of redox potentials • Developed a directed evolution screening approach to increase the fluorescence of bound natural cofactors in de novo designed proteins in E. coli
