Still ongoing Research Internship – University of Toulouse– 2024–2025Petrology, Cathodoluminescence & Fluid Inclusion Analysis of Pegmatitic Quartz in REE-Rich Peralkaline SystemsAs part of my Master’s program in Earth Sciences, I conducted a research internship focused on the petrogenetic and fluid evolution of quartz from pegmatitic agpaitic dykes of the Ambohimirahavavy alkaline complex in Madagascar. This magmatic system is globally significant for its enrichment in rare earth elements (REE) and high-field-strength elements (HFSE), hosted in peralkaline granitic pegmatites. The main goal was to reconstruct the fluid history linked to the mineralization processes using cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy and fluid inclusion petrography. These complementary techniques enabled the identification of three distinct generations of quartz (Qz1–Qz3), each recording a successive phase of magmatic to hydrothermal evolution. SEM-CL imaging was used to map growth zoning and guide the selection of representative fluid inclusion assemblages. This revealed a late orthomagmatic fluid event (Qz3), marked by brine-rich inclusions and metasomatic textures, likely responsible for the remobilization and concentration of REE from destabilized eudialyte-group minerals.Key skills acquired include advanced CL imaging (hot and cold cathode systems), SEM-CL data acquisition and processing, transmitted-light petrography, and fluid inclusion interpretation. This work contributes to ongoing research on the mechanisms of REE mobility in peralkaline systems and demonstrates the power of integrated analytical techniques to constrain fluid–rock interactions in ore-forming environments.
