About Spindel
At DC KinCare Alliance, we work to support kin (usually grandparents or other relatives) who have opened their homes and hearts to save DC’s most vulnerable and at-risk children whose parents are not able to care for them. Specifically, parents may be incarcerated, have a substance abuse problem, abuse or neglect their children, or be detained or deported. This has become a critical issue today with the national opioid epidemic and the crackdown on immigrants by ICE. Kin often step up to care for these children who have multiple and varied needs without any assistance, and do so despite the fact that many live in poverty and are disabled. At DC KinCare Alliance, we believe kin should not have to do this alone. We support and empower kin by identifying and advocating for effective healthcare, mental health, substance abuse, financial, and other support services for the whole family unit. We also provide information and advice to help kinship families find the best path forward that ensures protection and stability for the children they support, whether that means becoming licensed foster parents, permanent legal guardians, seeking custody in family court, or formulating a safe and thoughtful plan to safely return children to their parents.
