Cell culture contaminations are a serious problem in biological research. Possible reasons are mostly mishandling of cells during routine culture and cryopreservation but also the lack of convenient tests for the quality control of cell cultures. The result is that 15-30 % of cell lines in current use are estimated to be contaminated or to not be what they are thought to be.In principle, cell lines can be contaminated by a wide range of agents including i) bacteria, ii) viruses and other cell lines. Frequent bacterial, viral and inter-species contaminations can be rapidly detected by Multiplexion´s Multiplex cell Contamination Test (McCT), whereas a contamination of one human cell line by another human cell line (intra-human contamination) and the authentication of human cell lines is monitored by Multiplexion´s Multiplex Cell Authentication (MCA).

ABOUT MARKUS SCHMITT
As Head of R&D for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and oligonucleotide synthesis, I lead a multidisciplinary team of 10 scientists and technicians in driving innovation and development of cutting-edge genomic technologies. With a robust foundation in molecular biology and extensive hands-on experience in NGS platforms (Illumina, ONT, PacBio), molecular diagnostics, and assay development, I oversee the design and implementation of high-throughput, multiplexed nucleic acid assays that push the boundaries of precision and scalability. My expertise spans advanced molecular techniques including NGS, qPCR, droplet digital PCR, and Luminex-based multiplexing, applied to diagnostics and research applications such as cervical cancer screening and cell line authentication.
