About Mark Weber
The world needs entrepreneurs. I find my purpose in seeding and supporting them.I\'m an investor at Tectonic Ventures (early stage VC firm founded by MIT professor Matt Rhodes-Kropf), a lab-to-market advisor at the MIT Media Lab, and a board member of the Harambe Alliance of African Entrepreneurs.I previously served as a research scientist, founding strategy & operations lead, and corporate member program manager for the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. I also built and led a full stack business innovation team for IBM Research and ran the IBM Think Lab.My publications include scalable graph neural networks for anti-money laundering (NeurIPS and KDD Workshops), algorithmic fairness in lending (NeurIPS Workshop), and the supply chain finance implications of verifiable records using public blockchains (Journal of Management Science). In undergrad, I read a lot of books (seminal texts in all the major fields as part of Notre Dame\'s intensive great books program). In grad school, I had one foot in the Digital Currency Initiative at the MIT Media Lab and one foot in MIT Sloan earning my MBA in finance. I received a Legatum Fellowship for my work on b_verify, bridging the two. I have infinite gratitude for my advisors Simon Johnson, Neha Narula, and Nikos Trichakis. In a past life, I co-produced the award-winning documentary Poverty, Inc.(2015, as seen on Netflix) and lived out of a van on tour with the film across America and internationally (needed planes for that).I nerd out on AI, graphs, game theory, theory of mind, industrial economics, real options theory, system dynamics, political economy, and Aristotle. I run workshops for large organizations applying the scientific method for technical and organizational innovation in business, government, and civil society. You can find me (or join me) where adventure meets community: ultramarathon running, backcountry skiing, endurance motorcycling, free diving, spearfishing,(book) clubbing, and music going
