The Incident Support Team (IST) is the national management team which is activated by DHS/FEMA to respond to disasters and incidents of national significance to manage assets of the National Urban Search and Rescue (US & R) Response System. The US & R System is designed to provide specialized search and rescue capabilities to respond to natural and man-made disasters including those related to a WMD/CBRNE environment.Members rostered on an IST are required to be on call and expected to be available to respond within two hours of an activation for a response assignment. Membership on a Federal IST is an honor and a significant accomplishment that requires a large commitment of time and effort from both the individual and their agency. Members are chosen from a select few from across the United States and represent the best managers of the US & R System in the country.
