ABOUT MARK YOUNG

In 2023, I retired from the University of Alaska Fairbanks as Associate Professor of Applied Business, Emeritus. I was particularly honored to have the title of Emeritus bestowed upon me. Emeritus is an honor that is typically reserved for those obtaining the rank of Full Professor, however, I was awarded the distinction as a Associate Professor. It was humbling and I consider it to be my highest-level achievement, as it recognized me for my academic teaching, program administration and the service I have provided to my Program, the University, Fairbanks and the state of Alaska. I believe I left position just a bit better, thanks to those that came before me of course. During my many years of teaching, I referred to myself as a pracademic. That is to say, I combine my experience as a small business owner, work in marketing and in human resource management with the knowledge that I had gained through academia. The result was a more vibrant, relevant experience for my students. I am truly blessed to combine my knowledge, skills and abilities (attitudes) in effort to improve the lives of my students and my community. During my tenure with the university, I taught in the subject areas of general business, marketing, entrepreneurship, small business planning/management and customer service. In addition, I served on various committees such as Faculty Senate, Curriculum Development, Workforce Development and several Thesis committees to name a few. In addition, my students and I worked with industry such as Napa Auto Care Centers, to develop, design, administer, evaluate and report on various programs within the Center\'s and provided a formal report to their business development group. My two most significant contributions to the university and the state of Alaska were the development and implementation of a robust micro-credentialing program. Often called \"Badging,\" I along, with my colleague worked with the nation\'s leading badging organization, Credly to offer resume worthy credentials that went beyond the transcript. Our program was the first of its kind for the University and was designed to be scaled beyond the business program. Lastly, my most significant and culminating project was the design and delivery of a Supervisory program for managers in the seafood industry. This highly successful program was translated into Spanish and Tagalog and taught over a hundred workers how to be effective supervisors. It is an awesome accomplishment to have had the opportunity to work with an industry so vital to Alaska as well as the nation\'s economy.
