ABOUT MARK MILLER

Dr. Mark Miller is certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and in Medical Microbiology and then obtained a Master’s degree in Epidemiology & Biostatistics (McGill University). A staff microbiologist and infectious disease specialist since 1993 at the Jewish General Hospital (McGill Univ. hospital), he was Chair of Infection Prevention and Control, Chief of Clinical Microbiology, Head of Infectious Diseases and Director of Infectious Disease Research for over 25 years until 2012, when he became CMO at bioMérieux. He was designated a Full Professor of Medicine at McGill University in 2011. From October 2012 until January 2024, he was the full-time Chief Medical Officer and Executive VP at bioMérieux and was on the Executive Management Committee, reporting directly to the CEO. He resided and worked in France during that time. He created and directed the entire Medical Affairs department and initiated and led the Companion & Supportive Diagnostic group (which creates and uses diagnostics to benefit the use of biopharmaceuticals for improved patient outcomes) as well as the Public & Government Affairs team.From 2022 until 2024, he was a full-time Board Member at BioFire Defense (Salt Lake City, USA).His past research focused on the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of healthcare-associated infections. He has described the increased morbidity and mortality from healthcare-associated clonal C. difficile infections (CDI) in Canada, and analyzed the reuse of single-use medical devices. He is the co-discoverer of the hyper-virulent CD strain (NAP1/027) in Canada, along with Dr. Vivian Loo. He has researched the prevention and therapy of CDI with novel antibiotics and immunomodulators, and development of CDI severity-of-illness scoring systems (\"ATLAS\") and tools for assessing CDI-attributable mortality.He helped establish Quebec guidelines for healthcare workers infected with blood-borne diseases and was the Chairman of the Infection Control Working Group of McGill University for 10 years. He has co-authored over 130 publications (including 2 pivotal papers in the NEJM) and presented over 145 abstracts. He is past-president of AMMI-Canada, the professional society of Canadian physician specialists in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Semi-retired since January 2024, he assists and supports healthcare think-tanks, startup health-related companies and established biotech firms with his vast knowledge and diverse expertise. He has the enormous pride and joy of having 2 children and 3 grand-children.
