About Mark Johnston
My professional mission is to build effective emergency medical response systems with community members willing to intervene, skilled EMS responders committed to making a difference, and a research based, educational function for ongoing improvement of efficient, value-based service delivery. In my current role, the focus is on training and empowering laypersons to intervene during cardiac emergencies with CPR skills and the confidence and ability to use an accessible AED until first responders arrive.

Our mission is to reduce the death rate of sudden cardiac arrest. Today the chance of survival from cardiac arrest is about 7%. A common factor among survivors is that nearly all receive bystander CPR (usually from a close friend or relative) prior to the arrival of EMS. Bystander CPR combined with the use of an AED dramatically improves survival chances over those who receive CPR-only until EMS arrives. To accomplish our mission, we hope to soon see an accessible AED within five minutes of ANYWHERE in the Greater Cincinnati region and to continuously increase the number of trained people on the street. We provide AEDs for non-profit organizations like schools, churches, community centers, etc. with grant funding and donations received from the community.Since the formal launch of Project Heart ReStart, we have trained approximately people and placed about 800 AEDs throughout the region. During the past ten years, we have also engaged the real estate community through their \"Realtors with Heart\" program and trained over real estate agents and their friends. As a result of this and other efforts, we have helped increase the awareness of these potentially life-saving devices and the importance of not just knowing how to perform CPR and use an AED, but also the importance of being willing to act immediately when needed.Since July, 2023 we have also partnered with the Cincinnati Rotary Club and other partners to place AEDs in law enforcement vehicles patrolling the streets. To date, we have delivered or partnered with other organizations to provide AEDs for about 400 patrol vehicles in Hamilton County and Northern Kentucky and, with the help of the Rotary Club and others, the program is continuing to expand.
