ABOUT MARK HERTLING
Former soldier, Leadership Professor, Speaker, former CNN analyst. Served for four decades as a leader, commander and trainer in the US Army. Last posting prior to Army retirement in 2013 was Commander of US Army forces in Europe. Served 3 years in Combat and had tours of duty at the Army\'s National Training Center in California and the Joint Multinational Training Center in Germany. Commanded the 1st Armored Division and Task Force Iron in Northern Iraq during the surge. Revamped Army\'s Basic Soldier and Officer Training. Since retirement from the Army in 2013, served as a Senior VP with AdventHealth from 20••••18, contributing to global partnering in the US, Europe and South America. Led an emerging employee health program while developing and executing an award-winning and publicized physician/healthcare leadership program. From 2014-present continuously executed multiple award winning and researched physician/nurse/administrator leader programs at various healthcare systems & physician professional organizations in the US. From 20••••24 contributed as a military & national security analyst for CNN/CNNI.Currently a speaker for AAE speakers bureau on the topics of leadership, national security. Spoken to hundreds of professional, industry, scholastic and organizational forums. Appointed by President Obama to the President’s Council on Fitness, serving from 20••••17. Appointed by President Biden to the American Battle Monuments Commission, serving as Chairman from 20••••23.Since 2019, serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board at Indiana University’s School of Public Health. Appointed an adjunct scholar at the Modern War Institute at West Point from 20••••20. From 20••••23, an adjunct professor of strategic leadership at the Crummer School of Business, Rollins College; in 2024 named Professor of Practice in Leadership. Since 2021, Lead Faculty Member at Practicing Excellence. A 1975 graduate of West Point with Masters Degrees in Kinesiology, Military Arts & Sciences, and National Security Studies. In 2019 earned a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from the Crummer School defending mixed-method research on outcomes of a physician leadership program. In 2016, wrote \"Growing Physician Leaders” available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. In 2025 authored “If I Don’t Return. A Father’s Journal During War,”Available from Ballast Books, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other bookstores.
