Data Governance means making sure data is accurate so the business can do genuine data analysis and not \'technical guessing\'! Capital One UK have huge quantities of data stored in cloud and on-premise. And fortunately, we have strong, well matured data governance and data management policies in place. I head up the Data Governance team, and my job is to help the entire business understand how to - Identify everything about every data element consumed by our most critical reports and models - Create meaningful data quality rules - Understand and improve metadata - Build data lineage views - Put data retention rules in place - Understand the different data governance approaches required for cloud and on premise data - Link data producers and data consumers together, to share common values I create and deliver comprehensive data steward training along with extensive risk and control profiles to make sure the whole data governance programme is well managed. And just as importantly, I spend lots of time out in the business strengthening engagement in our data governance programme - everyone from VP\'s to our call centre operatives. Data governance only works if people want to do it! Adding great value through business wide engagement in a mature data governance programme, coupled with risk identification and control builds, and producing data governance / data steward training is how I enjoy my time at work each day!
