SKILLS
ABOUT MARK ABBEY
I have many years of finance experience, with particular focus on shared services, controls/compliance/risk and audit. For the past 15 years I have worked for Diageo plc. in a number of shared services, market, global and regional roles. I have been able grow a strong functional knowledge, gain a broad international experience and become a driven leader. For the last 4 years I have been leading the controls and compliance and shared services agenda for the Africa region. These cover 20 emerging markets including Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Africa. Through engagement at all levels and gaining the support of the leadership, the Africa markets have been able to reach the high standards that Diageo set.I moved to Kenya as Group Financial Controller, where I headed the East Africa shared service centre delivering financial services, reporting and controls and compliance, before setting up a regional Africa service centre. The implementation of Africa business service centre has introduced standard processes with stronger controls and reduced market capability risks. I played a lead role in the set up and market/functional migrations, which continues to grow and attract other markets and business processes. The clear strategy of delivering control, efficiency, standardisation and talent has been a key success.I have lead the Africa controls and compliance journey through a programme of implementing policies and standards, training for all staff, and creating tools to monitor and report has been a key part in its success. However the tone from the senior leaders of the businesses has been the drive to make the greatest shift. My working with the markets GM\'s and senior exec members has set a tone for all to follow. Having the right governance embedded and enough focus has meant that the ownership of controls and compliance is now managed by the market and supported by professional teams.
