ABOUT MARK A. CUNNINGHAM

I am a former Assistant County Administrator for Sarasota County, FL where I oversaw the following departments: Health and Human Services; Emergency Services; University of Florida Institute of Food, Agricultural and Science Extension, and Sustainability; Public Utilities; Solid Waste; and, Public Works. I previously oversaw Planning and Development Services; Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources; Libraries and Historic Resources; Sarasota County Area Transit; and, the Office of Business and Economic Development.I was the Executive Director of Planning and Development for the City of Denton, Texas from January 2008 to September 2012 where I was responsible for Building Inspections, Code Enforcement, Community Development, Gas Well Inspections, and Planning. From July 2005 to December 2007, I was the Director of Land Development for Polk County, Florida where I provided leadership and oversight for the county’s Current Planning, Land Development Engineering, Processing, and Development Services operations. Between 1991 and 2005, I worked for several cities and counties in Maryland and North Carolina in the field of planning, land development and zoning administration. I served eight years with the United States Marine Corps before I was honorably discharged in 1991.I have a Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in Urban Management from the University of Baltimore, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from Sojourner-Douglass College. I have certificates in Innovation for Economic Development, and Leadership Decision Making from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government.I am an International City/County Management Association Credentialed Manager; a Certified Public Manager; and certified planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners.I enjoy saltwater fishing, travelling with family and friends, reading, and doing landscaping.
