The Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF) program, part of Technology Transformation Services within GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, is a highly-competitive fellowship that pairs talented, diverse technologists and innovators with top civil servants and change-makers working at the highest levels of the federal government to be innovation catalysts. I serve as director of events and community partnerships, and have the privilege of building internal culture for the cohort and expanding relationships with the broader [civic] tech community through events and formal/informal partnerships. PIF unites outstanding technologists with federal leaders to improve the way our government builds, designs, and delivers services for the public. Hand-in-hand with federal agency partners, we identify impactful innovation projects of critical agency and/or national priority. Every year, our team recruits outstanding private-sector talent into our program. And then, we unite. PIF embeds our fellows within agencies as yearlong entrepreneurs in residence. With our agency partners, our fellows advise, prototype, and scale solutions using industry best practices across data science, design, engineering, product, and systems thinking. Our fellows serve as both strategic advisors and practitioners who build, test, and ship solutions. As of October 2020, PIF has recruited 193 fellows who have worked in more than 40 agencies to advance government innovation and deliver stronger public services. The program, which was started by the White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP), has been housed at GSA since 2013.
