Marisa is a scientist and social justice advocate. She completed her MS in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine and BS in Physiology and Neuroscience. She is interested in science communications and open to new and exciting opportunities that utilize her technical scientific skills and her ability to connect biological sciences with diversity, equity and inclusion. Marisa has over 6 years of scientific research experience, including 3 years of wet lab experience in genomics, neuroscience, and animal physiology. Her experience in the biotech industry showed her the ways of NGS library prep and single-cell DNA sequencing in a clinical diagnostic lab setting. You can say her passion for genomics has always been in her “DNA”! Marisa has over 2 years of DEI Program Management experience in higher education. She interned at the UCSD Women’s Center and led weekly DEI programs and initiatives with an intersectional feminist lens. As a graduate student at USC, she developed a user-friendly webpage with gender equity resources for her fellow USC students. Check it out! https://seip.usc.edu/initiatives/gender-equity-programs/ Marisa’s dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion grew stronger during her time at San Diego Squared. She was a Program Manager for the SD2 Scholars and Mentors programs. She developed genuine relationships with both high school and college students passionate about STEM. Along the way, she gained confidence in her networking skills by working hand-in-hand with STEM professionals and by assisting leadership with Diversity in STEM events. Marisa’s science communication skills allow her to speak on various biological science topics to a wide range of audiences, including experts in the stem cell and regenerative medicine field to enthusiastic high school students. Her leadership skills shine when she is in an environment that promotes curiosity, innovation, and diversity. She looks forward to connecting with colleagues in the scientific field and beyond!
