ABOUT MARION POWELL
I am a graduate of Willamette University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, double majoring in environmental science and anthropology, with an interest in natural resource conservation and climate justice.My interests in environmental science and anthropology stem from my upbringing on the island of Molokai. During my time on Molokai, I was invested in learning about the interconnections between the ‘aina (land) and its people. In my free time, I was an outrigger canoe paddler and for academics, I was heavily involved in the Science Fair, eventually competing at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.These passions lead me to continue my involvement in environmental science and anthropology in college where I was a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar at UC Santa Cruz and the Lead Coordinator and Zero-Waste Coordinator for the Students for Sustainability Institute at Willamette University. I’ve also opened my skill set post-graduation to participate in climate policy action, community engagement, and management through my current position as a Clackamas Chapter Co-Director for Unite Oregon.In addition to my career, I am currently pursuing a masters degree in Climate and Society at Columbia University’s Climate School with a specialization in disaster risk management. I am hoping to use this degree to determine strategies that best serve vulnerable communities impacted by climate change.
