ABOUT MARINA LAZIC
With over 10years of work experience in molecular biology, I am passionate about applying my research skills and knowledge to address environmental and biotechnological challenges. My mission is to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for the production of bioplastics from methane, a greenhouse gas that can be converted into valuable resources. I am currently TRASand Academic Instructor at the University of Alberta, where I collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and industry partners to advance the field of microbial biotechnology. In my PhD thesis I was focused on improving the production of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer, from methane using alphaproteobacterial methanotrophs, bacteria that can utilize methane as their sole carbon and energy source. Currently I use various molecular biology techniques, such as gene cloning, expression, and editing, to optimize the metabolic pathways and regulatory mechanisms of these bacteria. I also employ analytical methods, such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, to quantify the PHB yield and quality. Through my research, I have contributed to multiple publications and presentations, and received several awards and recognitions.
