About Marilyn Warburton
In my current work, I seek to identify and use natural allelic diversity in crops to solve problems in biotic and abiotic stress resistance and nutritional quality. I worked for 25 years on maize and wheat studies at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center and in the USDA ARS. I worked on the measurement of genetic diversity in maize and wheat to study constraints to conservation and use of plant genetic resources, and document gene flow between crops and wild relatives. I also worked on identification of maize genetic sequences associated with disease, insect, and drought tolerance and nutritional content, which now allow breeders to improve maize via marker assisted selection. Currently, I lead the Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing Research Unit of the USDA ARS. We acquire, maintain, evaluate, enhance, characterize, document and distribute assigned genetic resources of the USDA-ARS National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS), and conduct research on these species related to maintenance, characterization, and use. We are charged with collections of cool season crops including beans, forage legumes, food legumes, safflower, grasses, and vegetables, and many native species.
