ABOUT MARIESSA S.
As with many people who earn a BA in English, I thought I would be working at a groundbreaking literary agency discovering the next big-time author while editing manuscripts in cute cafes. Life took a slightly different turn for me after college, but nonetheless I continued to build my organizational skills, learned to grow and find my voice, and more specifically started to realize my love for editing and spying a missing comma within a manuscript. Once I returned to the States after a year abroad working at a literary agency in Jerusalem it all clicked. I started work as a children’s book editor, acquiring and editing books, tracking projects from idea to shipping to on the shelves, reviewing custom opportunities and building relationships within the company and with outside vendors. I found my groove and my love for creating project tracking grids. Who knew an excel grid could be so much fun to create and maintain! In my role as Director of Publishing with Sussman Education/Lightswitch Learning, I will collaborate with a strong team to acquire culturally responsive learning materials for classrooms across the country, oversee the editorial direction of our books while upholding production schedules and budgets and maintaining key retail partnership relationships. Outside of work, you can find me volunteering at my local animal shelter, strength training at the gym, browsing bookstores, and spending time exploring everything Manhattan has to offer.
